Graemachorry, which was originally a shepherd’s cottage, is a traditional house that is perfectly suited to those with a good sense of adventure who appreciate a proper break away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is set off the beaten track amidst the extensive Achentoul Estate near Kinbrace (6 miles) in Sutherland.

With beautiful views to take in all around and no other houses in sight, it is a true wilderness retreat that is ideally placed for exploring the wonderful scenery of the Flow Country.
The delightful wood-panelled sitting room (with a single bedroom off it) is kept cosy by a fire crackling away in the wood-burning stove that supplements the oil central heating. Electricity for light and power is provided by a generator and there is power to charge phones and laptops. The gas cooker in the neat kitchen with its handy breakfast bar seating provides the facility to boil water in a kettle and make toast in the grill.
From the elegant dining room a steep, narrow staircase (not suitable for those with mobility issues) leads upstairs. Two twin bedrooms and a single bedroom are laid out on this level with views out across the surrounding moorland and the chance to catch sight of deer grazing.
Expansive country views can be admired from both the cottage and garden, particularly looking south towards Loch Cuilaidh, Loch Ruathair and the rolling hills beyond. There are lots of walks straight from the front door although care should be taken with children due to the rugged landscape, burns and lochs around the cottage. The house is set up a two mile track that crosses open countryside. It is suitable for all but the lowest slung of vehicles and should be driven slowly and carefully.
The Auchentoul Estate extends to over 20,000 acres with six different lochs that are excellent for trout fishing. Salmon fishing can also be arranged in early spring on the River Helmsdale that flows from Loch Badanloch.
The train station in Kinbrace (6 miles) provides access to Helmsdale on the coast in around half an hour, where the Timespan Museum and Arts Centre offers a fascinating insight into local history and is a valuable source of genealogical information for those with family ties to the area.
At the Forsinard Flows RSPB reserve (5 miles) the vast wetlands attract a wide range of birdlife from hen harriers and greenshanks to dippers and golden plovers. A boardwalk leads out across the peatland to a viewing platform that has great expansive views of the reserve and is an ideal position to bird watch from.
The lovely sandy beach at Brora (34 miles) is a very scenic place for a walk along the shore or a spot of beachcombing. There is also an 18 hole golf course set right alongside it with some outstanding views to take in during play whilst making sure not to send the ball off swimming!
Well-known John O’Groats (52 miles) is an excellent place for wildlife spotting with colourful puffins to see as well as otters, seals, dolphins and even orcas out in the water. There is also the chance to head over as a foot passenger on the ferry to Orkney for a day of exploring and sightseeing.
