There are plenty of activities within walking distance from The Birdwatcher’s Cabin to fill your days. Explore Loch Fleet and the nature reserve right on your doorstep, take a wander around Balblair Wood with your furry friend, or head towards the bird hide, which can be found just along from The Birdwatcher’s Cabin, another amazing place to spot roaming wildlife, and within walking distance is Golspie Beach.

Located on the North Coast 500, there’s plenty to see in Golspie (3 miles), make your way to Sputtie Waterfall or play a round of golf at the links golf course. Finish your day with a visit to the breathtaking Dunrobin Castle and recharge in the tearoom with a warming bowl of soup or homemade cake.

Climb to the peak of Ben Bhraggie and marvel at the amazing vistas as well as the impressive Duke of Sutherland Monument. This great Highland hill also offers excellent mountain biking trails. The Big Burn Walk in Golspie is the perfect hidden gem; the 1.5-mile circular route leads up a gully along the side of The Big Burn and leads to a stunning waterfall.

History enthusiasts can find Cairn Liath Broch, a Pictish broch where you can climb to the top of the walls and an old guard chamber to discover, while the Timespan Centre in Helmsdale has an excellent museum and café to explore.

Explore the beautiful sands of Brora Beach (9 miles). Stay for salmon fishing on the River Brora, surf and swim on the waves near the harbour entrance.

The Coffee Bothy in Golspie serves freshly roasted, delicious coffee, while Highland Whisky Chocolates, which are handmade in Golspie, offer a delicious range of treats. The renowned Fish and Chips Restaurant La Mirage (20 miles) is extremely popular for its delicious, locally sourced food, especially the seafood platter. Head into Dornoch (9 miles) for a meal at The Curing Yard Restaurant at the Royal Marine Hotel in Brora, offering delicious and fresh local produce. Return to The Birdwatcher’s Cabin to warm up by the fire and embrace the serenity of the Scottish Highlands.
