Overview

House of Corsback is a cosy family home that immediately welcomes guests to settle in for their adventures on the north coast of Scotland.

An impressive mural in the sitting room depicts the Battle of Langside, which marked the final defeat of Mary, Queen of Scots, before her exile. When you’re not observing the mural, the lounge is a cosy space with views over the garden, a smart TV and plenty of books to keep you occupied.

The modern extension showcases a peaked roof with wood panelling; a soothing wood burner and the dining table comfortably seats over 8 guests. The highlight of the space is the large gable window which boasts tranquil vistas of the rugged Caithness countryside and neighbouring St John’s Loch.

The ground floor bedroom features a small double bed and a decorative fireplace with charming illustrations. Slate flooring extends into the kitchen, which is well-equipped, has ample storage and a large oil-fired Aga. There’s also a traditional larder with extra facilities and equipment. A handy shower room with a walk-in shower.

Moving upstairs, behold the magnificent paintings on your ascent. Upstairs, two double bedrooms, both with king-size beds; a bathroom with a bath with a shower over, a single bedroom and two twin bedrooms, accommodating plenty of friends and family for holidays on the Caithness coastline. Each room is decorated with countryside paraphernalia, drawings and paintings making the cottage feel like your very own home away from home.

Outside, old-style roses and rustic Caithness slate wonderfully decorate the garden. A separate external shed with a table tennis table keeps the family entertained in the evenings. The sauna is great for relaxing mornings watching wildlife pass by. There’s also an outdoor shower with a copper plate and a separate laundry room. Feel the invigorating breeze from the private garden where you’ll never be tired of the extraordinary views of the Scottish Highlands.

Map & Local

Wander to neighbouring St John’s Loch or explore the nearby village, Castletown, with basic amenities and a good butcher. Castletown borders a long 2-mile stretch of stunning sandy beach, Dunnet Beach and makes for the perfect stroll at any time of day. Take a circular walk up to Dunnet Head, the most northerly point of mainland UK and an RSPB nature reserve home to Puffins, Razorbills, Guillemots, Fulmars and Kittiwakes. You can also try your hand at fishing for brown trout or salmon on the river Thurso and Wick.

Just 5 miles along the road, Mey Castle and Gardens, famously once home to the Queen Mother, is open seasonally. Also in Castletown, tour and taste delicious whisky at Stannergill Whisky Distillery.

The town centre of Thurso (9 miles) offers plenty of shops, cosy cafés, restaurants and Thurso Beach, where surfing is a popular pastime. Learn the history of Thurso at North Coast Visitor Centre and stop in at the café for a sweet treat.

Take excellent walks on Brough Bay, Ham Harbour, St Johns Point and Duncansby Stacks, 60-metre-high red sandstone sea stacks that are an impressive sight to behold and home to large seabird colonies.

Holborn Head and Scrabster Harbour is a beautiful coastal walk along Thurso, or travel west and stroll along the invigorating coast at Strathy Bay. Scrabster also offers sea fishing. Join in on the North Coast 500, which passes near House of Corsback.

Scale nearby Beinn Ratha (approx. 20 miles) and find (as it is referred to by locals) the ‘Rock of Destiny’. Thurso Golf Club is 11 miles south, while the most northernly mainland 18-hole links course designed by James Braid, Reay Links Golf Course, is 20 miles away.

Capilla Tapas and The Galley, both just under 11 miles away, offer delicious food. For fine dining, the Forss Hotel Restaurant (14 miles) is a great option. During your time in Caithness, you’ll behold breathtaking dark skies with the occasional chance sighting of the Aurora Borealis.
