Inside the mix of antiques, railway artefacts and memorabilia are sure to delight guests. The main living area is upstairs at ‘Platform Level’ and is open plan with comfy seating and an electric stove that keeps it toasty. A step down takes you round to the neat, well-equipped kitchen area that even has a dishwasher so you can avoid the chore of doing the dishes.
There is a modern dining area alongside and the whole room is very light and bright with lots of windows that showcase the beautiful views out over the surrounding countryside. There is also a handy wc/utility room on this level that houses the laundry facilities.
Downstairs, at ‘Goods Yard’ level, are a spacious double bedroom with king-size bed, a twin bedroom and a large, modern shower room with a walk-in corner shower.
Outside, the cottage is set down its own driveway and has a charming deck (with furniture) that looks out over a lovely lawned area which is where the railway tracks once ran. It is the ideal place to sit and enjoy al fresco meals and the dark skies in the area make it easy to stargaze in the evenings. An innovative shed made out of railway sleepers with a grass roof provides secure storage and the footbridge that crosses what would have been the tracks is the only surviving Victorian timber footbridge of its kind.
You can walk off into the Minto Hills straight from the door and there is nearby Rubers Law for walkers to tackle, as well as the Cheviot and Eildon hills and parts of the Southern Upland Way that stretches right across Scotland from coast to coast.
There are lots of golf courses across the Borders, with the nearest being at Minto (1.5 miles) where there is a lovely 18-hole course. Denholm (2 miles) is centred round a pretty village green and has a couple of pubs and eateries, as well as a small grocery shop/PO, a butcher, a bakery and a small petrol station.
Hawick (5 miles) is the nearest place to stock up on supermarket supplies and history enthusiasts will enjoy visiting the four ruined abbeys at Jedburgh (8 miles), Melrose (11.5 miles), Dryburgh (13.5 miles) and Kelso (18.5 miles).
It is only an hour’s drive across to the east coast near Berwick-upon-Tweed where there are some lovely sandy beaches. The long stretch of beach at Coldingham Bay is particularly picturesque.
Heading north, the capital of Edinburgh is reachable in just over an hour’s drive. If you prefer to sit back and relax all the way there, you can experience the Waverley Line for yourself by taking the train up to the city from either Tweedbank (13.5 miles) or Galashiels (14 miles).
