Driving down one of the little lanes through the lovely Borders countryside near Kelso, you see across the fields a real, traditional, 'chocolate box' cottage standing quite alone and snuggling in to the trees behind it. That is Parkend Cottage.
With glorious views away to the Cheviots at the front and the Eildon Hills to the side and reached by a good private track, it is surrounded by its own sunny, south-facing gardens (with furniture).
Inside, it offers accommodation which is both comfortable and amazingly spacious. It has been carefully furnished in perfect keeping with its character and with considerable elegance and style. The very large sitting room is bright and airy with several windows and corner seating around the multi-fuel stove that provides added cosiness. There is an elegant dining area at the other end of the room and with its comfortable fully-upholstered chairs it is the perfect place for putting the world to rights after an evening meal.
There is a very large farmhouse kitchen with an Aga and additional electric rings. There is a further dining area that would be very useful for feeding the children and there are doors out to the east-facing terrace that is just right for lazy breakfasts al fresco. There is a utility room that houses the laundry facilities and an additional WC.
Upstairs there are three bedrooms, two doubles and a twin, that are all furnished with the same elegance as the sitting room. The bathroom and shower room on this level means that, even with a full house, there is unlikely to be much of a queue for the facilities, which is always an advantage. It is not a surprise that enthusiastic guests return to Parkend Cottage again and again!
The area is just right for those looking for a peaceful holiday in lovely surroundings, yet prefer not to be too remote.
Kelso, at the confluence of the Tweed and the Teviot, is a very pretty riverside town with a cobbled square, good eating places and lots of interesting little shops. It is within a few minutes' drive of the cottage and also boasts a racecourse, swimming pool, ice rink and golf course, as well as Floors Castle, the home of the Duke of Roxburghe. The prestigious Roxburghe golf course is just outside the town and fishermen can choose between the famous River Tweed and many less expensive rivers and lochans in the area.
To the west, there is excellent walking in the hills of the central Borders as well as numerous stately homes, castles and ruined abbeys to visit. There is riding close by at Nenthorn, while the sandy beaches of the Berwickshire and Northumbrian coast can be reached within the hour.
No trip to the area would be complete without a visit to Edinburgh, Scotland's elegant capital city. It is reachable in around an hour's drive, or in 55 minutes by train from Tweedbank (15 miles). Buses also run regularly from Kelso if you prefer to leave the car behind.
