Roxburghshire
The town of Roxburgh, once a royal burgh and important royal castle, is no more, but the county of Roxburghshire remains. It encompasses the attractive towns of Melrose, Jedburgh and Kelso, in fact, including Dryburgh all four of the famous Border abbeys are within its boundaries. The countryside is a mellow and peaceful landscape of rolling hills, woods and rich farmland and the area is studded with places of interest such as Floors Castle at Kelso, the Waterloo Monument at Peniel Heugh and Smailholm Tower.

Beautiful Countryside to Explore
The county is one of the most delightful in the Scottish Borders. It is scenically beautiful without being daunting, perfect for relaxing and recharging the batteries. It is also blessed with accessibility and an excellent infrastructure, something that can be lacking in wilder, more remote spots.

There is plenty to see and plenty to do at whatever pace you want to do it. A good network of quiet byways and uncrowded major roads, and, from 2015, the newly restored Waverley Line to Edinburgh, mean that it is going to be even easier to reach and explore.
The Tweed and Teviot rivers are famous for their fishing and the area offers great walking, being crossed by both the Southern Upland and St Cuthbert's Ways, as well as the end of the Pennine Way at Yetholm. Cycling, riding and canoeing are also readily available.
The Border towns of Jedburgh, Kelso and Melrose, are picturesque, peaceful places which are full of interest. In common with the other Border towns they all stage their colourful festivals in the summer. Jedburgh, in addition to its abbey, has its castle and jail (said to be haunted) and Mary Queen of Scots' House. Kelso, with its attractive cobbled square, is well provisioned with entertainments, with a swimming pool, ice rink and race course. Melrose, nestled beneath the Eildon Hills, has a claim to fame as it is the birthplace of the rugby sevens game, with the annual Melrose Sevens in mid-April bringing teams from all over the world.

|
We made a late booking of this cottage and received a quick response and email with arrivals instructions, despite the bank holidays. We were particularly impressed with the help we received from a lady I think was called Jenny, after locking ourselves out of the cottage. Thank you so much for contacting the owner for us and solving the problem, despite it probably being past the end of your working day!

We booked last minute, on the day of arrival, and Unique Cottages were excellent. Despite having just reopened after being closed for 4 days over the New Year period, they liaised efficiently with the owners and quickly confirmed availability. Communication was clear and helpful, and the whole process was smooth.
