It is an attractive traditional stone building that is full of character and has been completely refurbished and furnished to a very high standard throughout. It has a feeling of old world grandeur but with all the modern comforts you could wish for.
The cosy sitting room has comfortable seating centred round the traditional open fire that supplements the oil-fired central heating. The large dining kitchen is light and bright with the well-equipped kitchen area neatly laid out behind the dining area, meaning that the cook doesn’t have to miss out on all the fun.
All on one level there are three bedrooms, a double, a twin and a single room with a handy pull-out bed. The bedrooms continue the house’s tone of elegance and comfort with their soothing decor, good antique furniture and interesting pictures on the walls. There is a modern bathroom with a bath with shower over and there is also a useful additional WC.
Outside, the cottage stands in its own large enclosed garden (ideal for children) with extensive views across the surrounding countryside. There is also table tennis set up in the garage which is sure to keep the children amused whatever the weather. With an abundance of wildlife to be seen including roe deer, red squirrels, ravens and kites, to name but a few, Glenesslin is a cottage which cannot fail to please.
There are excellent walks straight from the house, with three cairns by Andy Goldsworthy within easy reach. In the hills and glens close by there is good walking and cycling and in the Scaur Glen there are more works by Andy Goldsworthy and bronze-age forts.
Salmon fishing on the River Nith can be arranged and there are good golf courses at Southerness (40 mins) and Dumfries (20 mins).
Less than an hour’s drive from the M74, the cottage is well placed for visiting one of the foremost attractions in the area, Drumlanrig Castle and Country Park, situated near the pretty village of Thornhill where there are some interesting traditional shops and good restaurants. Another place not to be missed is Glenkiln Reservoir, a few miles to the south of the cottage, where you can view a cross sculpture by Henry Moore.
The cottage is also handily situated for a visit to the pretty village of Moniaive (with an excellent chocolate shop) and the Solway coast where you can explore Caerlaverock Castle, the Sweetheart Abbey, the castle and NT gardens at Threave, Cally Gardens Nursery for keen gardeners and Cream o’Galloway for ice cream.
