The cottage is part of the Carse Estate located in Knapdale, an area of outstanding natural beauty just above the Kintyre peninsula on the west coast, some 10 miles from Tarbert. Just a 15 minute walk across the fields is Loch Stornoway, a horseshoe-shaped sea loch with a beautiful, large sandy beach at its head.
Inside its thick stone walls, the cottage’s accommodation is simple but attractive and kept cosy by double glazing and night storage heating. The warm and inviting sitting/dining room has an open fire with comfortable seating placed around it so everyone can toast their toes. It also has a handy dining area for convivial evening meals. The spacious kitchen is smart and modern, having been knocked through to provide a bit of extra space in what would probably once have been a larder or scullery.
All on one level, there are two bedrooms, a double and a twin, that are both of a good size. A bathroom completes the indoor accommodation.
Outside there is parking near the door and the garden behind the cottage (with furniture) is a lovely private place to sit in the sun, with views across the fields to the bay. The garden is completely enclosed, so that pets can enjoy roaming freely.
The nearest shops are at Tarbert, where there are also some good restaurants and sailing facilities for yachstmen.
In the other direction the award-winning Kilberry Inn (open April to October) is just 10 minutes up the road. And what a road! Keep the camera handy, for there are magnificent views across to the Isles of Jura and Islay and you are likely to see seals basking on the rocks right beside the road. Sometimes they even raise a lazy flipper in salute as you go past!
Fishing is available locally and there is a golf course on the way into Tarbert. If you turn right when you reach the main road, you can head off down the Mull of Kintyre and take the boat from Kennacraig to Islay with its legendary distilleries, or from Tayinloan across to little Gigha where you can visit the Achamore Gardens. Further north you can visit Arduaine Gardens on the way to Oban.
Those with an interest in history or archaeology will enjoy Kilmartin Glen, with ancient cairns and circles dating from 3000 BC.
The Crinan Canal, linking Loch Fyne with the Atlantic is another place to spend an enjoyable day just watching the boats pass through or walking or cycling along the towpath.
