Traigh Mhor (pronounced ‘try vohr’) is situated in an idyllic spot on a small working croft just 200 yards away from the stunning white sands and turquoise waters of Gott Bay on the Isle of Tiree in the Inner Hebrides.

This traditional cottage has been lovingly modernised whilst retaining many of its charming original features, including the wood-panelled ceilings of what was once the island’s Registry Office.
The warm and inviting sitting room has comfortable seating around a wood-burning stove that sits in an impressive original stone fireplace. The large south-facing picture windows keep the room light and bright and offer some fantastic sea views.
The modern, well-equipped kitchen has a dining area and a little multi-fuel stove to keep it cosy during lingering evening meals. The bathroom has a bath with shower over and an interesting original marble washstand. There is also a handy drying room.
Upstairs the rooms have slightly coombed ceilings and are divided up by the original wood panel partitions. There is a twin bedroom and two double bedrooms, one of which has an additional single bedroom off it.
Outside there is parking within the large enclosed garden (with furniture), which is laid to grass with a sunny southerly-facing aspect that is perfect for sitting and admiring the wonderful views of the bay. On a clear day you can even see the Treshnish Isles, Iona and the Isle of Mull off in the distance. There is also a shed that provides useful storage for bikes, etc.
The ferry across from Oban (vehicles and foot passengers) docks at Scarinish (2 miles). The ferry can get quite busy, particularly at weekends, and as tickets must be pre-booked we recommend that you book your ferry tickets at the same time as you book your holiday (see Calmac Ferries website). You can also fly across to Tiree from either Oban or Glasgow and car hire is available.
The glorious white sandy beach at Gott Bay is only 200 yards away and is the perfect place for surfing, wind surfing, kite surfing and kayaking (lessons available). Every October it plays host to the Tiree Wave Classic, a windsurfing competition that draws spectators and competitors from all over the UK.
There is a hotel with a bar/restaurant in walking distance of the house and a 9-hole golf course just half a mile away. Bikes and fishing equipment can be hired from the bay, so you can try a spot of sea fishing.
The island’s ‘capital’ settlement Scarinish (2 miles) has a butcher, a bank, a PO and a supermarket where you can stock up on supplies on the way to the house. Tiree is only 3 miles wide and 10 miles long so it is easy to get out and explore the whole of the island, perhaps spotting some of the traditional ‘spotty’ houses along the way. The quiet, single track roads are mainly flat so they are also ideal for walking and cycling.
The climate on the island is influenced by the warm Gulf stream and as a result it enjoys amongst the highest number of hours of sunshine in the UK. Its unique situation has resulted in a machair habitat with many rare plants and wild flowers that attract unusual insects and birds such as skylarks, peewits, corncrakes and snipes. There are also seals, dolphins and even basking sharks to be spotted off the coastline. Star gazers will be in their element on Tiree too as, being fairly sparsely populated and having no streetlights, it offers superb conditions for admiring the night skies in all their glory.
To the north west of the island is a scenic circular walking route that allows you to take in the remains of the broch of Dun Mor and the mysterious Ringing Stone which emits a bell-like sound when struck.
