Taolain Cottage is a delightful, detached house in the heart of the Otter Estate with a wonderful outlook towards stunning Loch Fyne, near Kilfinan on Argyll’s Cowal peninsula.

This is a great, cosy retreat for a couple seeking some peace and quiet with its wood-burning stove in the sitting room to cuddle up in front of and a dining area that is perfect just for two. Window seats have also been placed around for admiring the beautiful view towards the loch.
The kitchen is nice and bright and airy with a door that leads out to the garden. In the double bedroom the décor has been kept soothing and neutral and a relaxing soak can be enjoyed in the bath that has a useful hand shower.
Pets will enjoy playing in the enclosed garden outside as it has been mostly laid to grass. A pretty outdoor dining area has been positioned looking out towards the water so boats can be watched bobbing along against the mountain backdrop. The cottage is set up 150 metres of rough track which should be driven with care.
As the Otter Estate extends to around 1,800 acres there is plenty to explore for walkers and hill climbers amongst the rolling, forested landscape, as well as lots of wildlife to try to spot along the way.
The cottage is well placed as it enjoys a peaceful, rural setting yet is only just over half a mile from the Kilfinan Hotel so a bar meal or drink or two can be enjoyed there with only a short stroll back afterwards.
There is a grocery shop in Kames (8 miles) and in the village of Tighnabruaich (9 miles) the palm trees that can be seen along the water’s edge are able to thrive due to the area’s mild microclimate. The old pier where boats used to come in can still be seen and the traditional game of shinty (similar to hockey) is played here.
At Kilbride Bay (9.5 miles), known locally as Ostel Bay, there is an amazing stretch of white sandy beach with an expansive view out towards the Isle of Arran. It is the ideal place to while away the day with some beachcombing or paddling whilst taking in the coastal scenery.
Heading north up the loch, the Oystercatcher restaurant in Otter Ferry (3.5 miles) serves excellent meals. The Loch Fyne Oyster Bar (35 miles) right at the top of the loch about an hour’s drive away is also well worth a visit for amazingly fresh seafood and, of course, oysters.
It is only around 2 hours’ drive into Glasgow for a day’s shopping or exploring the sights such as Glasgow Cathedral, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow Science Centre and the beautiful Botanic Gardens.
