Overview

Just 1.5 miles from the stunning white sands of Reef Beach, the bothy reimagines the traditional ‘bothy’ with modern comforts and breathtaking sea views from its south-facing timber deck and generous picture windows. Guests also have access to a private pebble beach area directly below the cabin.

Though compact in size, Wild Roag Bothy makes excellent use of its space. Built to high energy efficiency standards, it stays warm and cosy year-round thanks to electric radiators and a solid-fuel stove. The design is simple and uncluttered, with no compromise on comfort.

Clad in dark timber, the bothy nestles beautifully into its rocky surroundings. You enter into the main living and dining space, where wood panelling enhances the warm, inviting atmosphere. A comfy sofa and armchair face a small dining table with two chairs.

The kitchen at the rear is well equipped with an electric cooker, fridge freezer and a range of small appliances, along with ample workspace and storage. A second door leads out to a side deck.

The king-size bed is tucked behind a curtain in the style of a traditional box bed. From here, windows to the front and side offer spectacular views to wake up to.

A sliding door opens to a stylish bathroom with a shower, wash-hand basin, w.c. and heated towel rail.

Wild Roag Bothy is a thoughtfully designed, romantic hideaway in a truly special coastal setting – perfect for exploring the Hebridean landscape and relaxing in peaceful seclusion.

Map & Local

Wild Roag Bothy stands on the Bhaltos peninsula, an area of outstanding natural beauty on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis. Just 1.5 miles away is the breathtaking Reef Beach – one of Scotland’s finest, with white sands and turquoise waters backed by dunes and hills. The surrounding landscape is wild and dramatic, yet softened by these beautiful beaches that fringe the Atlantic.

The area is a haven for wildlife. Whales and dolphins are often seen in the clear waters, while the skies are home to a wide variety of birdlife, including the impressive white-tailed sea eagle. Deer roam the hills and otters are frequently spotted near the bothy itself.

The name Bhaltos comes from the Norse for ‘high ridge’, a nod to its Viking heritage, but the area’s history runs far deeper. Traces of Pictish, Iron Age, Celtic and medieval cultures can be found throughout the surrounding landscape.

One of the most famous archaeological discoveries in the area is the Lewis Chessmen – a hoard of 93 carved walrus ivory chess pieces found near Uig, just a few miles from the bothy. Most are now held in museums in London and Edinburgh, but a small number are displayed in the Museum nan Eilean in Stornoway (38 miles).

The island is scattered with ancient sites. The most iconic is the Calanais (Callanish) Standing Stones, often called Scotland’s Stonehenge. Located 25 miles away, some of the Neolithic stones stand over 12 feet tall. Further north, Dun Carloway Broch is one of the best-preserved examples of these Iron Age fortified dwellings, unique to northern Scotland.

Outdoor lovers will find plenty to enjoy. Local lochs are rich in trout, and there are well-known salmon beats nearby – just check permit requirements. The beaches are perfect for wild swimming, kayaking and watersports. Cyclists will enjoy the quiet roads and gentle terrain, while walkers have a wide choice of routes, from easy strolls to more demanding hikes.

There is a fine 18-hole golf course in Stornoway, laid out through the grounds of Lews Castle. Stornoway is by far the largest town in the Western Isles and offers a wide range of shopping, dining and leisure opportunities. The nearest village is Uig (4 miles), which has a well-stocked community shop, a community café and the popular Uig Sands Restaurant. There is also a petrol station with an EV charging point in the village.

Wild Roag Bothy is wonderfully positioned, with sea views and a peaceful setting on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis – the perfect base for exploring this unspoilt corner of the Hebrides.
