Built in the 1930’s by the same family who currently own the house, Tigh an Data has been lovingly renovated to a high standard whilst preserving the charming original features. Tigh an Data is the ideal hideaway yet perfectly located to explore the magnitude of outdoor pursuits that Harris has to offer.
The ground floor of Tigh an Data features the sitting room and kitchen/ dining room. Kept toasty by the wood-burning stove, the sitting room is the perfect spot to relax by the fire, looking out towards St Clement's Church, nestling in with a book or playing board games with your loved ones. The kitchen is extremely well-equipped and has ample seating for 4 guests. Naturally, both rooms offer unforgettable views of the adjacent water and neighbouring sheep.
Upstairs, there are two comfortable bedrooms, a twin room and a double room. Both rooms have ample storage space and neat dressing tables, and, of course, hold excellent views out to the loch and landscapes beyond.
The enclosed garden is ideal for letting dogs out while you rest on the east-facing benches, watching the seals swim by or sheep grazing on the hills. Take a stroll along the shoreline of Borosdale Bay, or make your way towards St Clement’s Church and explore the medieval ruins.
There’s plenty to explore on the land surrounding Tigh an Data, find the nearby shipwreck across the loch or take a journey to nearby St Clement’s Church. Bring a boat and try kayaking from the sea, accessible from the bottom of the garden. Scale Roineabhal hill, while the ascent is rough and pathless, the extraordinary views of the surrounding islands make it worth the challenge.
For shopping and provisions, the Harris community store ‘An Clacahan’ in nearby Leverburgh offers a wide range of goods, crafts, and fuel.
Tarbert (21 miles) provides a unique shopping experience at the Harris Tweed shop, also accessible via the scenic 'Golden Road,' along the rocky East Coast. In Tarbert, you'll also find A D Munro, a butcher, bakery, and general grocer, which offers everything you might need for your stay at Tigh an Data.
A beautiful day trip can be taken on the ferry from Leverburgh to Berneray island, which connects to North Uist and spend your day wandering along the white sandy beaches. On the east, Beasdaire conditions are perfect for wind and kitesurfing, while on the west, the three-mile stretch of white sands is bordered by machair and available for exploration. Try the Berneray Circular Walk from Borve, which leads you through years of the island’s rich history and enjoy watching the seals on the rocks below. Boat trips to St Kilda, where you can observe thousands of seabirds and potentially spot dolphins, basking sharks, and minke whales, are also available seasonally.
The Isle of Harris Brewery features a Taproom, Restaurant & Deli, located on the pier of Leverburgh and is the perfect nearby location to stop for a drink, meal or quick snack. If you enjoy fine dining, try the Scarista House and Flavour restaurant in Tarbert. For a more casual dining experience, try food trucks specialising in freshly caught seafood, such as Lorna’s Larder and the Butty Bus in Leverburgh.
Outdoor lovers can arrange sea kayaking, snorkelling and mountain biking half-day and day trips with Wild Harris. Fishing permits are obtainable through Obbe Fishery and Finsbay Fishings. Explore Clisham (28 miles away), the highest mountain in the Outer Hebrides, for a full day's hillwalking. Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy North Harris Eagle Observatory (31 miles away), home to numerous resident Golden Eagles.
