Overview

Nestled in the peaceful countryside near the village of Acharacle on Scotland’s stunning west coast, Shielfoot Cottage is perfect for families or couples looking for a relaxing escape. Set in a beautiful part of the Highlands, this charming cottage offers a warm and inviting retreat from the world.

Step inside and find a handy cloakroom where you can hang your coats and dry off your four-legged friend after a long walk through the surrounding countryside. The spacious sitting room, with its plush sofas and cosy wood-burning stove, is the ideal spot to unwind after a day of exploring. Settle in for a quiet evening or keep the little ones entertained with a flat-screen TV and WiFi.

The well-equipped kitchen has everything you need for a comfortable stay, including a dining table perfect for family meals together. The two bedrooms – one double and one twin – provide a restful space for a family of four to sleep soundly after a day of adventures.

Outside, take a seat at the picnic bench, where the only sounds are birdsong and the gentle breeze, offering moments of true tranquillity. Just 2 miles away, Acharacle provides the essentials with a local shop, Post Office, and charming cafés where you can enjoy a cuppa and a slice of cake.

The area is a paradise for lovers of the outdoors, with breathtaking coastal scenery and endless opportunities for walking, hiking, cycling, and water sports like sailing or kayaking. Wildlife enthusiasts will love visiting the nearby RSPB reserve, where golden eagles and rare white-tailed eagles are among the many species you might spot.

A short drive takes you to some of the West Coast’s most beautiful white sandy beaches, where you can relax by the turquoise waters. If you're lucky, you might even catch sight of dolphins or whales passing by.

Shielfoot Cottage offers a secluded getaway in one of Scotland’s most picturesque landscapes, perfect for those seeking peace, quiet, and a connection with nature.

Map & Local

This area is known for its stunning coastline, dramatic scenery, and rich wildlife. From May to September, you can enjoy salmon and sea trout fishing on the River Shiel, just a short walk across the field behind the cottage, or on Loch Shiel, 2 miles away, where boat hire is also available for a peaceful day on the water.

For those looking for more activities, golf, hill walking, and cycling are popular choices in the area. You can explore a scenic 7.5-mile trail from Acharacle, leading to Castle Tioram, the historic seat of Clan MacDonald of Clan Ranald, perched on the shores of Loch Moidart. This easy trail takes around 2 hours and 35 minutes and offers stunning views, with plenty of tranquility, as it’s not often busy.

For a different perspective, take a cruise along Loch Shiel from Acharacle to Glenfinnan, enjoying the breathtaking landscapes along the way. The cruise is perfect for wildlife enthusiasts hoping to spot the rare Black-throated Diver, White-tailed Eagle, and perhaps even a Golden Eagle. The Singing Sands (6.5 miles) and Ardtoe (5.5 miles) both offer picturesque sandy beaches, and the Silver Sands of Morar (32 miles) are also easily reachable for a relaxing beach day.

Fort William, less than an hour away, offers a variety of activities, including golf, shopping, and swimming at the leisure centre, or you could challenge yourself to climb Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. For a scenic round of golf, the Traigh links course offers fantastic views. Alternatively, head to Mallaig to catch the ferry across to the Isle of Skye for a memorable day trip.

To the southwest, Ardnamurchan Point (30 miles), the westernmost point of mainland Britain, awaits with its iconic Stevenson Lighthouse and the stunning beach at Sanna Bay. On your way, stop at Kilchoan, where you can take the summer car ferry to Tobermory on the Isle of Mull for a unique island experience.
