Mallaig

The road that leads to the small fishing port of Mallaig in Lochaber is known as the ‘road to the isles’ as the port allows for ferry trips that head out to the Small Isles of Eigg, Muck, Rum and Canna.

Ferries trips over to Armadale on the Sleat peninsula of the wonderful Isle of Skye can be taken from Mallaig and also hour long wildlife cruises in the summer months that give the opportunity to spot an array of birdlife, dolphins, seals, whales and even basking sharks.

Start and End Point Of An Amazing Journey

Mallaig is the last stop at the end of the West Highland Railway line that runs all the way from Fort William some 84 miles away.

Glenfinnan Viaduct

On the route you travel over the Glenfinnan viaduct that has in more recent years become known by many as the ‘Harry Potter bridge’ due to its use as an iconic filming location in four of the Harry Potter films. It is well worth taking the time for a trip on the line as it is a very scenic ride with plenty of photo opportunities along the way.

During the summer there are special journeys that run from Fort William to Mallaig on a steam train, the Jacobite Express, an experience that truly is unforgettable and has been described as ‘the greatest railway journey in the world’!
