With accommodation for six people in one double and two twin rooms, the cottage is ideal for a get-away-from-it-all family holiday. A wildlife paradise, deer roam freely – often spotted grazing in the field in front of the house – while otters fish and play in the River Canaird to the front and the nearby lochs. Birdlife is spectacular, too, with regular sightings of oystercatchers, curlews, golden plovers and even the magnificent, iconic golden eagles that nest on the estate.
The cottage stands on its own at the end of a mile of private track. Its main entrance leads into a welcoming hallway with generous cupboard space and access to all the downstairs rooms. This lower level is tiled throughout, with underfloor heating to keep things warm and cosy.
The main living space downstairs is an L-shaped lounge/kitchen/dining room. The lounge features an elegant fireplace with a wood-burning stove, comfortable seating and Freesat television. The kitchen area is spacious and well equipped, with a fridge, freezer, LPG cooker, the usual range of small appliances and ample work surfaces. There’s also a dining/breakfast table with seating for six.
Glazed doors lead out to a large conservatory with a second dining table. With breathtaking views across the Highland landscape, this room is sure to be a favourite – especially if the deer decide to join you for dinner – and there’s another table on the stone patio outside. The downstairs accommodation also includes a family bathroom and one of the twin bedrooms, which may be particularly suitable for guests with mobility issues.
Upstairs, there is a second bathroom featuring a separate shower, while a second WC is located across the hallway. The master bedroom has a king-sized bed and a good-sized chest of drawers, with hanging space available in a large cupboard in the hall. The second twin bedroom is also on this level.
With a combination of electric and solid fuel central heating, the cottage is easy to heat on colder days and nights. There is no mobile signal, but a Starlink system has been installed to provide high speed internet access. Outside, there is ample garden ground and plenty of parking.
In summary, Glen Cottage is the perfect place for those who want to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of a remote and beautiful location – without having to forgo their home comforts.
To describe the scenic beauty of the north-west Highlands as merely “spectacular” would be an understatement. This land of striking contrasts offers beaches that wouldn’t look out of place in the Caribbean, sentinel-like mountains rising from the landscape like prehistoric beasts, and sparkling lochs that are havens for a dazzling array of birds and wildlife.
While the scenery will nourish the souls of guests at Glen Cottage, more practical sustenance is available in Ullapool (7.5 miles), the bustling fishing and ferry port that serves as the area’s unofficial capital. With a population of around 1,500, Ullapool is modest in size but punches well above its weight, boasting a good supermarket, a variety of other shops and a petrol station. In recent years, it has also gained a reputation as something of a foodie’s paradise. Sample the award-winning Seafood Shack for the freshest local ingredients, or visit the quirky Ceilidh Place – part bookshop, part music venue, and fully committed to serving mouth-watering meals.
For a stunning day out, head west along the single-track road (with passing places) to Achiltibuie. This dramatic route passes the small but beautifully formed mountain Stac Pollaidh (612 metres), which can be climbed via a well-made path offering jaw-dropping views across the hills of Assynt, including the iconic, sugar-loaf silhouette of Suilven. Achiltibuie lies on the Coigach Peninsula, which boasts lovely beaches overlooking the romantic Summer Isles. Boat trips to the Isles depart from both Achiltibuie and Ullapool.
Bathed by the Gulf Stream, the area enjoys a surprisingly mild climate. Palm trees appear in the most unexpected places, while the nearby Inverewe Garden (50 miles), a National Trust for Scotland property, showcases an astonishing and colourful collection of tropical and semi-tropical plants. If fauna is more your interest than flora, three species of deer are regularly seen near the cottage, and the wider area is home to otters, foxes and pine martens. Whales and dolphins can sometimes be spotted offshore, while birdwatchers will find much to delight in.
Sea fishing trips can be arranged through several local operators. It’s even possible to take a day cruise to the Outer Hebrides via the ferry from Ullapool to Stornoway – though with just a 40-minute turnaround, it’s best enjoyed as a scenic voyage rather than a shore visit. For something truly unique, head 17 miles north to the bone caves at Inchnadamph. These four natural limestone caves sit high in the cliffs of Creag nan Uamh (“Crag of the Caves”), and are named for the remarkable number of animal bones uncovered there during excavations.
