Tigh an Eas is close to the sandy shores of the dramatic and peaceful Gruinard Bay, a hidden gem in Wester Ross with plenty of history to discover. Walk from the beautiful sandy bays and hike up a breathtaking glen to Eas Dubh Falls. Just 1 mile away is the nearest village, Laide, with its amenities, including a post office with general store and filling station. A stone’s throw from Tigh an Eas, you can paint your own pottery at Prickly Fish.

The NC500 runs past Tigh an Eas; join it for part of the way or visit the nearby beach off the route, Mellon Udrigle (4 miles), which has a beautiful white sandy bay and turquoise waters with extraordinary views across the bay to An Teallach and the mountains on the Coigach peninsula.

Located just half a mile from the coastline, there are plenty of opportunities for water activities. Spot otters and seals lounging on the rocks, or try the 2-hour wildlife cruise (running March–October) from Gairloch Harbour (16 miles), where you’ll see whales, seals, dolphins and sea eagles. Tigh an Eas is an excellent base for hill-walking, with the mountains of the Fisherfield Forest, Torridon and the Fannichs just short drives away. Flowerdale Forest is an unforgettable woodland valley with fantastic mountain biking trails. Hire your bike from Gairloch and challenge yourself on the trail, taking in the magnificent scenery and wildlife. Or organise a bespoke wildlife tour with Wild Ewe Safaris. The subtropical Inverewe Garden at Poolewe is an extremely special place just 9 miles down the road. There are also opportunities for freshwater fishing in the nearby lochs and rivers.

Try the Gairloch Golf Club and its marvellous links course; the views of the Torridon mountains, the Isle of Skye and the Western Isles alone are a worthy reason to visit. A little bit further, but well worth the journey, is Rua Reidh Lighthouse (28 miles), where you’ll find unforgettable views of the ocean and beyond to Skye, Lewis and Harris, as well as plenty of sea creatures.

The Ocean View Hotel (open April to September) serves tasty food and drink and is a short walk down the same lane from Tigh an Eas. Gairloch Museum and Café is a splendid lunch spot where you can immerse yourself in the poetry of William Ross, known as the Robbie Burns of the Highlands.

Also in Gairloch, Gale has a brilliant community-run café, while Black Pearl Creole Kitchen is excellent for delicious dine-in Caribbean cuisine. Several miles outside of Gairloch is the Badachro Inn (21.5 miles), a little more of a journey but offering memorable vistas of Loch Gairloch and fresh seafood from the local area.
