Surrounded by stunning Highland scenery, Braemar offers a remote-feeling escape that’s still within 60 miles of Aberdeen, Dundee and Perth. With timber cladding and high-end finishes, Broom Lodge blends beautifully into its setting. The front porch, framed by tree trunks, leads into a spacious entrance with room for walking gear.
The open-plan living area is the centrepiece of the lodge, featuring a dramatic double-height atrium and full-height windows with spectacular views over the Gathering field and wild landscape beyond. Large sofas surround a wood-burning stove, creating a warm, inviting space to relax after days out walking, cycling or skiing.
The fully equipped kitchen includes an oven/microwave, ceramic hob, American-style fridge-freezer, wine fridge and ample cupboard space. The oak dining table seats eight, with glass doors opening to a patio for al fresco meals.
A handy utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer leads to the enclosed garden, which has direct access to the forest behind the house via a secret gate – perfect for scenic dog walks.
Two bedrooms are downstairs (a king-size and a twin/double), while upstairs there are two more (another king and a twin/double), all with modern en suite shower rooms. There’s also a separate WC on the ground floor.
Upstairs, the galleried landing includes a games table (air hockey, table tennis and pool) and an office space with a large desk, power points and forest views.
One upstairs bedroom overlooks the Caledonian pine forest, while the other features twin Velux windows for natural light and stargazing.
The enclosed garden is ideal for children and dogs, with an outdoor dining area, gas BBQ, raised seating for watching red squirrels in the Scots Pines, and a playhouse for younger guests.
There’s much more to Braemar than the well-stocked village shop, local pub Farquharson’s, and the world-famous Braemar Gathering, which takes place each September just outside the gates of Broom Lodge. With its vibrant arts scene, community events, and growing reputation for food and drink, the village has become a year-round destination, popular with visitors and the occasional celebrity.
Set within the Cairngorms National Park, Braemar is a superb base for outdoor adventures. Several Munros are nearby, including the three Cairnwell Munros (9 miles), the more challenging An Socach (10 miles on foot), and, near Ballater (16 miles), Ben Macdui (the UK’s second-highest peak) and the dramatic Lochnagar.
Mountain biking is excellent, with forest tracks, rugged trails, and a ski lift at Glenshee Ski Centre (9 miles) that carries bikes and riders up to the Cairngorm plateau. Road cyclists will enjoy the scenic, quiet roads in the area.
There’s fishing on the River Dee, a round of golf at Braemar Golf Club, and championship courses at Blairgowrie (34 miles). In winter, Braemar is ideal for skiing at Glenshee, with equipment hire available locally at Braemar Mountain Sports.
Nearby Ballater (16 miles) is a charming Victorian town worth exploring. It’s home to an award-winning butcher, stylish boutiques, independent galleries, cafés and the excellent Fish Shop restaurant, which serves fresh local seafood. Craigendarroch’s leisure facilities are open to day guests.
Braemar has its share of castles too. Braemar Castle, the ancestral home of the Farquharson Clan, is open in summer, and a short riverside walk leads to the ruins of Kindrochit Castle, once a royal stronghold. Just 9 miles away, the grounds of Balmoral Castle open to the public from 1 April to 10 August each year.
Wildlife in this area is spectacular. Spot golden eagles, red deer, otters, capercaillie, and the elusive Scottish crossbill, found only in the Cairngorms. Red squirrels, often seen in the garden at Broom Lodge, are frequent and much-loved visitors.
