Upon entering Roy Cottage, you’ll find the impressive double-height open-plan living space. Here, you can spend many hours by the central wood-burning stove or in front of the full-height gable window. This spectacular feature enhances the space. The open plan includes the kitchen and dining area. The kitchen is well-equipped, and the dining space comfortably seats 4 guests.
The entire gable is made of glass, making it perfect for gazing towards Carn na Drochaide Corbett, spotting red squirrels and enjoying the sunset. Patio doors open onto the enclosed garden and outdoor seating area. This is an idyllic spot to sit with a morning cuppa and take in the peaceful atmosphere of the Cairngorms National Park.
A snug area is located towards the back of Roy Cottage and is ideal for nights staying in, watching a film, or opening the sliding doors into a second enclosed back garden space, also with outdoor seating and brilliant for dining al fresco. This space looks towards the east for calm mornings, watching the sunrise. Opposite the snug, there’s a downstairs bathroom for guests and an external door.
The charm doesn’t end there; on the mezzanine floor, the sofa is perfectly placed for resting with a book from the shelf or appreciating the view beyond the glass gable. Also on this floor, the master bedroom offers a king-size bed, an ensuite with a walk-in shower, and leads out to a balcony, the perfect spot to watch wildlife together. Adjacent is another double bedroom; both rooms have high ceilings and ample space for guests to relax. An upstairs shower room also serves this floor.
Ample private parking is outside the property. Cyclists can store bikes in the secure shed outside, and a barbecue and smoker are also provided at Roy Cottage.
Braemar is one of the most iconic locations in the whole of Scotland, and as such, there’s plenty to get up to during your time there. The centre of Braemar village is within short walking distance of Roy Cottage for all local amenities and activities. The Fife Arms, which is like an art gallery inside with over 10,000 artworks on display, serves delicious food and drink from its various bars and restaurants. From the centre of Braemar, the Lion’s Face Trail circular walking route heads out into the surrounding countryside with the chance to take in the striking Braemar Castle along the way.
Outdoor adventures are found just outside the door of Roy Cottage. Morrone Corbett makes a lovely hill circuit, or riverside stroll, and offers 360° views of the surrounding Cairngorm peaks and over Braemar village itself. The 18-hole Braemar Golf Club affords the chance to play on the highest 18-hole golf course in Scotland, with gorgeous scenery to admire, followed by a stop off at the welcoming clubhouse.
Braemar Mountain Sports offers cycle hire for those taking on trails by bike. Glenshee ski centre is only 9 miles down the road and is frequented by skiers and snowboarders alike. Explore Royal Deeside like a local and take a tour with Yellow Welly Tours to discover the area's hidden gems as told to you by a local.
Every September, the Braemar Gathering, the best-known highland games, comes to the Duke of Fife Memorial Park. The event celebrates traditional highland food, dress, music, and dancing. The British Royal Family often attends. The heavy events, such as hammer throwing and caber tossing, are especially impressive. Cabers can weigh over 150lbs. It is hard not to be amazed as they are sent hurtling through the air with apparent ease.
Guided tours of the royal residence, Balmoral Castle (9 miles) and its grand ballroom are available; there are also scenic walks to be had around its beautiful gardens and grounds.
The city of Perth is 50 miles south. The nearest coastline at Stonehaven is 56 miles east, but worth the journey for the rugged coast and dramatic views. Also, towards the east, the city centre of Aberdeen is just under 60 miles away.
