Overview

The Log House, a substantial detached Norwegian-style log cabin, is located on the historic Garpel Estate in the heart of East Ayrshire, just 6 miles from the small but welcoming village of Muirkirk. Perfectly suited for larger parties, the house can comfortably accommodate up to 18 guests in nine bedrooms.

This unique property, built in the 1970s by joining two cabins together, was designed with sustainability in mind. Its turfed roof provides natural insulation while supporting local wildlife to thrive, which is no doubt why it has been featured in publications such as Scotland on Sunday and even Vogue.

Just over a mile down a well-maintained single-track road that runs alongside the meandering Whitehaugh Water (with Brown Trout fishing available), the cabin forms an L-shape around a large gravel courtyard with ample parking for 8 cars. A short set of wooden stairs takes you to the front door, beyond which the main wing awaits. Off the hallway to the right is a very spacious master bedroom, along with a further three bedrooms (two doubles and a twin with washbasins), as well as a bathroom, shower room, and WC.

To the left of the entrance hallway is a large kitchen with a range cooker and dining space for 6. Beyond this lies the dining room, which comfortably seats eight and can be extended to seat up to 18 guests when the additional fold-out tables and boards are in place. The main living room is simple, functional, and comfortable, featuring a grand fireplace and double doors leading out onto the sizeable decking – perfect for alfresco dining with your whole party. There are also comfy seats where you can relax, enjoy the views with a glass of wine, or cosy up for some stargazing long into the night.

To the left of the dining room is a hallway (also with access to the decking) that leads to the second wing. This wing offers additional space for relaxation, with a cosy second sitting room ideal for movie nights or quiet moments with a book. It also includes the convenience of a utility room (with access from the courtyard) where you can dry off the dogs and leave muddy boots after a day of exploring. Five further bedrooms (three twins and two doubles, all with washbasins), two bathrooms, and a shower room complete the accommodation.

Beyond the decking is a private garden area laid to grass, with stunning views over the moorland – a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest that attracts a wide variety of birds, including red grouse, kestrels, and willow warblers, to name just a few.

The variety of wildlife surrounding The Log House is not only a fortunate aspect of its placement on the Garpel Estate but a testament to the hard work on the land, as it’s recently been awarded Level 1 Accreditation by Wildlife Estate Scotland. This not only celebrates the array of animals gracing the land but showcases the estate’s commitment and dedication to biodiversity and improving land conservation.

Please Note: To support lambing season and protect vulnerable ground-nesting birds, we kindly ask that no dogs are brought to The Log House between April and June.
