South Tweed is one of three attractive, larch clad rural retreats set within the rolling country landscape of the historic Old Melrose Estate by the River Tweed, 3 miles from Melrose in the Scottish Borders.
This charming lodge sits within its own large enclosed grass garden and faces west towards the Eildon Hills, providing a peaceful setting with open views and lovely evening light.
This area is ideal for walking, with paths leading straight from the door and plenty of routes to explore throughout the Estate and beyond. With the hills on the horizon and the countryside stretching out ahead, guests can enjoy a real sense of space whether they are out exploring or simply relaxing indoors by the comforting glow of the wood-burning stove.
The lodge has a light and welcoming open-plan layout, with the sitting, dining and kitchen areas arranged to make good use of the space. High ceilings enhance the bright, airy feel and the contemporary fittings throughout make it a very comfortable place to stay.
A cosy double bedroom with a king-size bed is set at one end, with sliding doors that open directly into the enclosed garden area. From here, there are west-facing views across the lawn and fields towards the Eildon Hills. The modern bathroom includes a generous walk-in shower and a separate bath, ideal for unwinding after a day out walking.
With direct access to the Estate’s footpaths and a gentle route down towards the River Tweed, South Tweed is well placed for enjoying the scenery of this part of the Borders. After a day outdoors, the Estate tearoom provides an inviting stop for a cup of tea and a slice of cake.
As part of a conservation-focused Estate with woodland and riverside walks, South Tweed offers a peaceful and comfortable base for those looking to experience the natural beauty of the Scottish Borders.
Old Melrose has a lovely tearoom just a short walk away, which is pet friendly and makes an ideal stop during local walks. There is also an antiques hall to browse, adding to the charm of the Estate.
A small supermarket is available in Newtown St Boswells (2 miles) and nearby St Boswells (2.5 miles) has a popular café/bookshop with an excellent deli, along with a choice of restaurants and takeaway options.
Melrose (2.5 miles) offers an appealing mix of independent shops, another supermarket and a good range of places to eat. The town is well known for the Melrose Sevens rugby tournament and its Roman connections, which are explored at the Trimontium Museum near the Market Square.
Bikes can be hired in Melrose for those who want to explore the quieter local roads, while mountain biking enthusiasts can head to Innerleithen (20 miles) to try the graded downhill trails at the 7stanes centre.
Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital, is just an hour’s drive away and makes an excellent day trip. Alternatively, the Borders Railway from Tweedbank (4.5 miles) offers a straightforward route into the centre of the city in under an hour.
