Lochside is a compact but perfectly formed wooden cabin set in a prime position right on the shore of Loch Hosta on the delightful island of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. Only 10 minutes' walk from the stunning sands of Hosta beach, it offers the perfect location to start a great Hebridean adventure.

Guests can have a proper break away from the hustle and bustle of daily life here and fully soak in the blissful surroundings. It is quite the romantic hideaway with an open plan layout that means that everything has its place and is easily to hand whilst a fire crackles away in the wood-burning stove to keep it all snug.
The cooking facilities are on the more basic side but are still adequate with an electric hob, countertop oven/grill and microwave provided. When not in use the dining table and chairs fold neatly away, although the temptation will surely be to take morning coffee out on the deck with the amazing loch vista spread out before it. The internal accommodation is completed by a neat shower room.
Seating out on the raised deck by the front door allows the impressive panorama over the rugged surrounding croftland and wonderful loch to be fully appreciated. The loch is known as one of the best places to fish on the island and has harboured some very large brown trout over the years.
A short stretch of track leads to the cabin and, once the gate is closed, the garden is enclosed with parking just by the deck. Remnants of the old croft can be found within the rough grounds and an old stone circle has been made good use of with a fire pit in the middle and stone seating around it for toasting marshmallows. A variety of birds can often be seen overhead with everything from hen harriers and corncrakes to short eared owls and even magnificent golden eagles to keep an eye out for.
One of the first things to do is head to Hosta beach (known locally as Traigh Stir) to take a wander along the unspoilt sands. Pretty wildflowers thrive amongst the sand dunes and, as holidays are a great chance to try new activities, why not give paddle boarding or even surfing a go whilst there?
Hosta is just one of the beautiful beaches that are dotted along the island’s coastline and it is well worth taking time to explore some of the others. Sollas beach (8 miles), or Traigh Iar, is particularly picturesque as it is made up of broken shell fragments and is lined by machair.
A supermarket can be found at Sollas to supplement the supplies that can be picked up at Bayhead Shop (4 miles), where the petrol tank can also be topped up. At RSPB Balnarald (2 miles) even more fascinating birdlife can be spotted against the backdrop of the scenic nature reserve.
Take in more of the sights by heading out to sea on a Lady Anne Boat Trip from Kallin harbour (17 miles) to see seals, red deer, porpoises and otters as well as even more seabirds. This really is a birdwatcher’s paradise!
Benbecula (17 miles) sits between North and South Uist and is accessed via causeways from each. For such a small island it is surprisingly well catered for with a 9 hole golf course, a riding school and a swimming pool. It also has a small airport and car hire available within the terminal, providing a good alternative to travelling to the islands by ferry.
