Overview

Shielside has been refurbished to create a large, comfortable home featuring spacious, warm and well-planned rooms. Large windows showcase spectacular views over Loch Shiel and to the hills beyond.

The heart of the home is the extremely well-equipped kitchen/diner which is a joy to cook in. The breakfast island and large dining table have plenty of seating for everyone in the house to enjoy meals together. There are also two sitting rooms – one downstairs with a log burner and plenty of comfy sofas for relaxing, cosy evenings and an additional area upstairs, perfect for bird watching over the loch and spotting the loch’s resident otters and red squirrels in the trees. There is also a covered outdoor sitooterie, accessed off the dining room, equipped with a barbeque where guests can dine al fresco.

The house is beautifully decorated throughout and thoughtfully equipped. There is a handy addition of a small lift for those with limited ability, which can be enabled upon request. A utility space perfect for storing boots and coats after outdoor adventures as well as laundry facilities and a WC can be found adjacent to the front door of Shielside.

The property sleeps up to 8 guests in four spacious bedrooms, one downstairs and three upstairs. One is configured as a family room with an additional single bed. All bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms, including one with a bath. Each bedroom is tastefully decorated with its own style. The bedrooms also have Velux and large picture windows letting in lots of light and showcasing the magnificent Ardnamurchan landscapes.

French doors lead out to an enclosed garden area, where guests can let pets roam. Ample parking is available on site at Shielside.

Map & Local

Shielside’s location, overlooking the banks of the River Shiel near both Loch Shiel and Loch Sunart and just 4 miles from the sandy coast at Ardtoe Beach, meaning many opportunities for lochside and water-based adventures. There are a wide variety of countryside walks, many accessed directly from the house to suite all abilities. Both Loch Shiel and local beaches are perfect for kayaking, paddle boarding and swimming.

Climb the small hills close to the house for spectacular views over Kentra Bay, and North East up Loch Shiel with the summit of Ben Nevis peeking through the surrounding hills. Castle Tioram (3 miles) is situated on a tidal island, boasting medieval history and astonishing scenery.

More coastal adventures await at Kentra Bay, where you will find Singing Sands, beach boasting wide sandy shores. Nature lovers can visit Garbh Eilean wildlife hide, less than 7 miles away and the RSPB reserve in Glenborrodale with weekly guided walks in summer. The UK mainland’s most westerly golf course, Traigh Golf Club, is a nine-hole course, found along a 30-mile picturesque route from Shielside. The area is also fantastic for cyclists, located directly on the Sunart and Moidart loop covering Fort William, Glenfinnan, Acharacle and Ardgour, or try the 40-mile Liddesdale loop over at Kingairloch.

Boat trips are available from Acharacle up 18-mile-long Loch Shiel to Glenfinnan to see a wide range of bird life and ending at the famous Harry Potter viaduct. Other trips run from Salen jetty and Laga bay for wildlife spotting on Loch Sunart with a chance to spot white tailed eagles, seals, otters, dolphins and porpoises.

Local village amenities are all within a ten-minute walk from the house and include a village shop, pub, bakery, café and gift shop. For finer dining Mingarry Park restaurant (1.6 miles) has a brilliant Scottish menu.

Shielside is 27 miles from the majestic coast at Sanna Bay, widely noted as one of the UK’s best beaches, and the lighthouse which marks the most westerly point on the UK mainland, offering spectacular views across to the smaller isles and Skye. Fort William and the Ben Nevis range are 45 miles away. The Isle of Mull is accessible by ferry from Kilchoan or Lochaline, for a longer day trip, or travel through Mull to the beautiful and enchanting island of Iona.
