Lochalsh & Wester Ross

From the shores of Loch Alsh the road heads north to Wester Ross, the unique and lovely Applecross Peninsula and the magnificent mountains of Torridon beyond. This is arguably the most spectacular part of Scotland’s west coast and is a mecca for walkers and climbers, fishermen and wildlife enthusiasts. With some wonderful beaches too, there is just as much here for those who come simply to relax and recharge their batteries among such peaceful and superb surroundings.

A Beautiful Area to Explore

It is easy to reach the Lochalsh area, either from Inverness or via Spean Bridge, Invergarry and Loch Cluanie. Both approaches lead through amazing scenery and incidentally the railway journey from Lochcarron to Inverness has been voted the third most scenic in the world! Once there, too, it isn't difficult to go still further, whether to Skye or onwards to the north.

As an alternative to the Skye Bridge, in summer a little community-run turntable ferry operates across the Sound of Sleat between Glenelg and Kylerhea on Skye. While beyond Strathcarron the roads tend to be single track, they are quiet and the scenery is so wonderful there is in any case no incentive to speed along.

Part of the 'Pass of the Cattle'

Thrill-seekers should turn off at Kishorn to traverse the amazing Bealach na Ba', the Pass of the Cattle, the only Alpine road in Britain, which, while not for the faint-hearted, amply repays your courage in terms of views, not to mention fabulous food at Applecross's two famous eating places. The more cautious can reach the same destination by going round the top of the peninsula.

Further north, in Wester Ross, it is well worth diverting north of Ullapool to take in the village of Achiltibuie overlooking the Summer Isles near the end of the road.

Having absorbed its beauties, there is no need to return to the main road. Better rather to turn off on the 'Wee mad road' which, once again with stunning views, leads up to Lochinver via Kirkaig, where there is an impressive waterfall and a surprising, but very welcome, bookshop and café! As you will discover, this country is full of these pleasant surprises, both scenic and man-made.
